Internet Speed Requirements for IPTV: HD, Full HD and 4K
How much internet speed you need for IPTV in SD, HD, Full HD and 4K, how to test your connection properly, and why stability matters more than peak speed.
Quick answer
Recommended stable speeds per screen are 3–5 Mbps for SD, 5–10 Mbps for HD, 10–20 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K. Stability matters more than peak speed, so test on the TV itself in the evening. Ethernet is most reliable. HD uses roughly 1–3 GB per hour; 4K uses 7 GB or more.

"How fast does my internet need to be?" is the most common question before buying. The short answer is below, followed by how to test your connection properly.
Recommended speeds per screen
| Quality | Typical resolution | Recommended stable speed |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 480p–576p | 3–5 Mbps |
| HD | 720p | 5–10 Mbps |
| Full HD | 1080p | 10–20 Mbps |
| 4K / UHD | 2160p | 25 Mbps or more |
These are per screen. Two TVs watching Full HD at the same time need roughly double. Leave headroom for phones, laptops and other household use.
Stability matters more than peak speed
A 100 Mbps connection that drops to 5 Mbps every few seconds will buffer more than a steady 30 Mbps line. Things that hurt stability:
- Weak Wi-Fi signal or interference from neighbouring networks.
- Busy evening hours on shared broadband.
- Other devices downloading or uploading heavily.
- Distant or congested VPN servers.
How to test your connection properly
- Test on the device you'll watch on — the TV or streaming stick, not your phone next to the router.
- Test in the evening, when networks are busiest.
- Run the test a few times and note the lowest result.
- Look at jitter and packet loss if your test shows them — high values mean an unstable connection.
On Fire TV and Android TV, you can install a speed-test app from the store; many Smart TVs have a built-in network test in their settings.
Wi-Fi vs Ethernet
- Ethernet: the most stable option. Use it whenever the TV is near the router.
- 5 GHz Wi-Fi: faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz, but shorter range.
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi: longer range but more interference; fine for HD at short distance, often not enough for 4K.
- Powerline / mesh: good alternatives when cabling isn't possible.
Mobile data
On 4G or 5G, HD streaming can use 1.5–3 GB per hour. Check your data allowance before watching on mobile.
Data caps
If your broadband plan has a monthly cap, estimate your usage: roughly 1–3 GB per hour for HD and 7 GB or more per hour for 4K.
